Shortage of Medications
Despite the critical importance of medications, they are not readily available.
Last year, the demand for GLP-1 drugs led to widespread stock shortages, which continued this year. Supply chain and med-tech expert Dr. Jay Bhaumik highlighted:
“Whether it’s a patient’s cancer treatment or critical care medication, the unpredictable availability of life-saving drugs has challenged healthcare providers around the world. The global drug shortage crisis continues to impact healthcare systems worldwide.”
As of April 17, 2025, in the United States, drug shortages remain a significant issue.
There are 270 active drug shortages occurring monthly, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Most drug shortages last around 18 months, but half extend beyond two years, severely impacting patients who need them.
